Diagram 21: Lean forward, pinch the end of the nose, breathe through mouth.

Step 1

  • Sit upright, lean the body forward, and tilt the head slightly forward.

Step 2

  • Firmly pinch the soft end of the nose just above the nostrils (openings) for about 10 to 15 minutes. Breathe through your mouth. (Diagram 21)

Step 3

  • After 10 to 15 minutes, release nostrils slowly. Rest before returning to activity.

Step 4

  • If the nosebleed continues or restarts, gently blow out any clots and reapply pressure for another 10 to 15 minutes. Or, a cotton ball soaked in Afrin® nose spray can be placed in the bleeding nostril (opening), following which the soft end of the nose is again pinched closed. The cotton ball can be removed in 15 to 20 minutes.

Step 5

  • If the bleeding will not stop, call your doctor or go to the Emergency Room. Also call your doctor or go to the Emergency Room if:
    • The nosebleed was caused by an injury and if the nose looks crooked or broken.
    • There is a lot of swelling and it is difficult to breathe.
    • The person is feeling lightheaded.
