Poisoning

Get the Facts!

  • Try to find out the type of poison, time of exposure, amount, and the person’s age and symptoms.
  • Call 911 and the Pittsburgh Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222.
  • Follow their instructions.
  • Bring the poison container, label, or name with the person to emergency care. Bring the entire plant or mushroom (in a paper bag) or a sample of vomit to help with identification.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

  • Get to fresh air immediately.
  • If the person is unconscious, take a deep breath of clean air before entering the space, then drag or carry them to clean air.
  • Call 911 and the Pittsburgh Poison Center at 1-800-222-1222.
  • Only if the area is safe for you to enter, quickly open windows and doors, turn off appliances, engine, or heat source. Call the Allegheny County Health Department at 412-687-ACHD [2243], or the gas company, or heating contractor, or call 911.
